Common Mistakes Too Many Entrepreneurs Make

Share:

Opening a business can be a breath of fresh air for many. It means not having to answer to anyone and working set hours every day. Plus, you get to turn your hobbies, passion, and ideas—things you already enjoy doing and thinking about most of the time—into your main source of income. This is probably why there are about 30 million small businesses up and running across the country.

However, a business is not guaranteed success. There’s so much that goes into it that entrepreneurs often overlook, and if you want to ensure that your business thrives, here are some common mistakes you need to avoid:

Not Having a Solid Business Plan

When you start a business, you already have an initial idea of what it’s going to be about and how it’ll operate. Easy-peasy, right? Well, often, entrepreneurs make the mistake of simply relying on this idea in their head and not documenting it. To effectively run a business, you have to have a clear outline of who you are, what you do, and what your goals will be moving forward.

You also need to figure out how you want your business to be structured and managed. These should be formalized when you register, and usually comprise your articles of organization and operating agreement — two key documents you should prepare when registering an LLC. Though not always required, these documents work like a roadmap for you, your partners, and your management, and can help ensure your business’s longevity.

Neglecting Employee Management

Most budding entrepreneurs make the mistake of putting human resource management on the back burner. But if you want to build and lead a company, you have to have the right people to lead. Make sure to base your hiring decisions not just on personality and charisma, but also on whether or not your candidates have the right skills that fit your business needs.

Once you have hired the right people, you need to know the right way to lead, too. To guide you and your team, you can create standard operating procedures, which will serve as your manual for even the smallest tasks. Doing this will ensure that all processes are taken care of and it will also help you from worrying too much about every little detail all the time.

Foregoing the Marketing Plan

When you start your business, the excitement can push you to think that you can do everything yourself, including marketing and advertising. Some entrepreneurs even take the Photoshop work into their own hands, even if they’ve never used it, to make campaigns that are ad hoc. Often, the results are not worth the effort you put in and can even tarnish your image as a company.

Instead, create a marketing plan, as it can do wonders for your business. It should contain who you’re planning to sell to, when and where you plan to communicate with them, and how. If your communications are clear, your target customers will have an easier time understanding your product or service and why they should choose you among others.

Refusing to Improve and Innovate

If you want to gain and retain customers, keep employees, and make sure stakeholders are satisfied, always listen closely to constructive feedback. There are steps you can take like creating a closed customer feedback loop and keeping your ears open for internal and external issues. Even if there are no blatant complaints, it is still worth revisiting your ideas and processes regularly to make sure there is no trouble that goes undetected. Anyway, mistakes only become big problems for your business if you refuse to acknowledge and act on them.

At the end of the day, there’s no shame in making a few slip-ups now and then as an entrepreneur—we’re all human after all! But being aware of these common mistakes is the first step to being proactive in ensuring your business stays on track for success. Remember that, as a business leader, you are the one in charge of steering your company clear of trouble. By taking the time to create proper systems, procedures, and plans, you can lead your company in a direction where it thrives and effectively cements your place as one of the top players in your industry.
