Process & Profits: How to Prepare Your Business for Recession

Share:

Have you heard about the recession? Just kidding–we are all feeling the squeeze from inflation costs. However, small businesses are especially hurt by the Recession of 2022. The real question is whether or not we are actually in the deepest part of the recession right now. Is this going to get worse for small businesses? Experts say yes.

Small business owners are encouraged to get ahead of the recession as much as possible. What does that mean? Simply put: prepare your business finances.

Four Ways to Recession-Proof Your Business

One way to prepare your business finances for recession is to secure your financing before you need it. Nothing hits harder in business than needing cash for expansions, marketing, etc., but not having it and not having a way to get it. At some point, banks may stop handing out loans. So, looking into a business line of credit or a business loan may be a good idea before it is too late.

Another way to prepare your business finances for recession is to analyze operating processes and costs. It is always a good idea to dig down deep and look for inefficiencies in your processes. Once you find operational inefficiencies, then you can think about inefficient costs within those processes. The goal for every business owner is to reduce expenses smartly. For example, you can decide which services your business needs to survive.

A third way to prepare your business finances is to make business partnerships. Business partnerships include referral programs, affiliate programs, and business relationships with others where you both benefit from each other’s customers.

A fourth way to prepare your business finances is to build a cash reserve. The average suggested amount of cash to set aside is 6-12 months of operating expenses because you never know what will happen. I am looking at you, 2020.

Just so we are clear, we do not need to be preparing for a recession to accomplish any of the suggestions listed above. Is it a good idea to build a cash reserve despite a recession? Yes. Is it a good idea to make business partnerships? Yes! Those partnerships lead to increased sales, which leads to increased profits! Smart business owners prepare their business finances for whatever may happen!
