Up-skilling your team is a critical part of running a business today. It is so important for your team to keep up with the latest and greatest technological advances but if you and your team are already busy, how do you do that?
In this post, you will learn four tips to roll out a training plan that will up-skill your team on borrowed time.
Step One: Make a Plan
The first step is thinking through the needs of your team. Pay attention to the questions that you are frequently being asked and the mistakes that are showing up a lot that could use some retraining. Also, consider new processes or technology changes that your team needs to learn. Keep a list of the trainings that you want to create.
I recommend implementing weekly team training. When you run a weekly team meeting, you can include a short training segment as part of the meeting. Even if you cannot fit that in every week, you can create training content that can be sent out to your team.
Step Two: Share the Workload
Let your team participate in training other team members. This helps with morale, helps team members to get that spotlight, and allows them to see how they are doing in their role as an expert. Take a look at the list of trainings that you wrote, and think about who would be the best team member to create and deliver each one.
Step Three: Record the Training
One of the most important things you can do to up-skill your team on borrowed time is to record each training session so you do not have to keep delivering the same training over and over again. You can do this by simply recording the training on your phone if the training is being presented in person. It can also be recorded in the form of a document that is sent out or using loom or zoom to record a video. Loom is one of my favorite tools for recording a screen share while walking through the steps.
Step Four: Organize the Training
Once the training pieces are created, you need to get them organized and onto a platform where your team can search for them and complete the training on their own. If you have the training organized and easy to find, when you hire someone new, they can easily go back and find it. My favorite tool for organizing all of your training into a standard operating procedure type format, or just to be able to organize all of those loom videos and put them together in a method that is easy for someone to work through is Trainual.
Up-skilling your team on borrowed time is easier when you make a plan, share the workload, record the trainings, and organize everything on a platform that makes it simple for employees to find and complete the training.
